Stone & Cement Tools: Quikrete® Vinyl Concrete Patcher is great stuff to model with. We have tested many concrete patchers and find that this holds detail when cast with texture forms, can be thinned to fill between stones so it appears as mortar, is tough when cured, feathers easily to 1/16" of an inch and contains Portland Cement and NO Gypsum (so it won't deteriorate or require sealing). The "Patcher," the 1/2" hardware cloth (19 gauge wire) and WD40 are inexpensive. Most are found at your local building center. The "Stone Nippers" are ceramic tile nippers and you probably already have a pair in your shop.

Gluing Styrene
: Styrene is not like wood and other porous materials when it comes to gluing. Styrene parts are joined by bonding with a solvent which dissolves both surfaces and fuses them together. There are many plastic glues that do this and they need lots of ventilation. Gary E., a master modeler, preferred Oatey - All purpose cement Clear (used on PVC pipes). We use super glue or CA (Cyanoacrylate Adhesive) – found at hobby stores or online. With thinner and quick setting CA you can "wick" members when clamped. With thicker CA you get a slower "set" but a stronger bond (or so they say). If you've followed articles in Garden Railways there is a discussion about CA and whether or not it's weather proof. It has held up for us in all-weather conditions. We also slot, tab, and interlock our styrene window, door and accessory kits to make sure that they hold together.
